Director, Public Affairs
Julia Murphy is a seasoned communications strategist with proven expertise shaping high-stakes public affairs campaigns across California’s complex political and regulatory landscape. She specializes in narrative development, stakeholder engagement and crisis communications, advising clients on strategies that shape public perception and advance policy outcomes.
Prior to joining Think Big, Julia led comprehensive communications campaigns for a Sacramento-based public affairs firm, where she partnered with clients to develop strategic narratives and execute targeted engagement efforts that drove legislative and regulatory success.
Previously, she served as a public information officer at the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, where she played a key role in crisis communications during statewide emergencies. In this role, she managed media relations in fast-moving environments, coordinated messaging with state and local partners and supported major preparedness and recovery initiatives, including the Great California ShakeOut Tour and Listos California.
Earlier in her career, Julia helped manage statewide public affairs campaigns at another Sacramento-based firm and served as a legislative aide in the California State Assembly, developing a strong command of the legislative process and cultivating deep relationships across California’s Capitol community.
Julia holds a Master of Arts in Government with a concentration in Political Communication from Johns Hopkins University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. She is currently pursuing a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. In her free time, Julia enjoys reading, attending fitness classes, baking (especially sourdough) and spending time with her husband, family and friends.
